The color version of this shot is warm and summery. Take the color away and the same weathervane becomes something else entirely. The texture of the aged metal, the patina on the copper roof tiles, the delicate compass arms against a flat grey sky. It’s the same detail, seen differently.
Whale weathervanes have been part of New England coastal architecture for centuries and this one looks like it has earned every year of its weathering. In black and white it feels less like a summer memory and more like a piece of the island that has always been there and always will be.
For anyone who loves Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, or Cape Cod, this print works in the same rooms as the color version but brings a quieter, more understated energy to the wall. A natural fit alongside other black and white photography or as a standalone piece in a neutral coastal interior.
